Ferenc Kiss : The Month of Love

ER-CD 054

Third, „concept” album of the musician-composer contains arrangements of the most beautiful love songs of the Carpathian  Basin and love poems he composed melody for. After the titles The Outlaws of the City and The Sounds of the Seven Towers, this is another work feeding mainly on the archaic layers of the Hungarian folk tradition. In this original and modern musical environment, traditional elements of the peasant music and the archaic forms open new ways of thoughts in the audience. The record was made with the participation of the most outstanding Hungarian performers of the genre (Bea Palya, Etnofon Music Company, Vándor Vokál).

"Approaching my fifties I started thinking, what would happen to me, if I’d lose the feeling. If I’d forget what it’s like to be in love. Out of fear, I started to write these songs. My own experiences, archaic folk texts and tunes, natural, cosmic world-view of our ancestors, their ancient, superstitious beliefs, retentive rituals of their strong communities, the Eastern and Christian mythology, the world of tales, the scrap-glass of knowledge, and wine have helped me to give them birth. Finally, I’ve calmed down. I’m not skilled in astronomy, astrology even less. I’m just a common dreamer. I have never been seriously involved in the research of our folklore’s astral-mythology, either. On the other hand, based on my sole imagination and instinct I had to fabricate a horoscope of my own, according to which, the month of Love is that of the Peacock. It is the thirteenth zodiac, screamingly disrupting the order and regularity. It’s the Eastern House of Moon. It has no cycle, it’s always unexpected and one cannot anticipate it. Many are in its permanent power, and there are a few unaffected, too. From the game of light and shadow, it seems to be the light, the blaze. But the dazzle is deceitful, as the beautiful feathering of the peacock is just an optical illusion. And that’s why I trust it. We need miracles, tales and dreams to bring order to our life."

"Saints bathing in the Sun’s yard

Lovers cuddling in the Moon’s yard

Parents praying for us in the church yard

Children romping in our house garden"
